HeatShield Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Damper Repair: The Boston Owner’s Guide

HeatShield damper repair in Boston typically runs $280-$520 installed, depending on whether the damper plate, frame, or both need replacement. We stock HeatShield-compatible damper assemblies and hardware on our trucks, and most swaps are completed in a single visit. You’ll usually notice the problem first as a draft you can’t close off, or a damper handle that spins without catching.

HeatShield dampers are built for masonry flues common in Boston’s older housing stock, from the triple-deckers in Dorchester to the pre-war colonials in Roslindale and West Roxbury. The cast-aluminum alloy resists corrosion better than standard steel in our freeze-thaw cycles, but the hinge pin and control linkage still wear out after years of opening and closing through New England’s wide temperature swings.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield produces dampers in three primary series: the standard top-mount damper for masonry chimneys, the lyemount conversion damper for fireplaces with damaged or missing throat dampers, and the direct-seal damper for factory-built chimneys. The model number is stamped on the damper frame, visible from the firebox with a flashlight, or on the chain/cable housing if you have a top-mount unit.

The critical compatibility gotcha in Boston homes: HeatShield’s standard 13″ × 13″ and 17″ × 17″ frames fit most masonry flues, but the 8″ × 12″ and 10″ × 10″ sizes were discontinued in 2019. If your damper frame is cracked and you have one of those smaller sizes, we fabricate a custom adapter plate rather than hunt for NOS inventory that may not exist. We source OEM HeatShield hardware and also carry quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco when the OEM lead time stretches past burning season. Russell Haines makes the call on which to use based on what we find during the camera inspection, and we explain the choice before we order anything.

Signs Your HeatShield Damper Repair Is Failing

  • Draft even with the damper “closed.” The seal gasket has compressed or the damper plate has warped from heat cycling. In Boston, we see this accelerated by homeowners who burn green cordwood, which burns cooler and deposits acidic moisture on the metal.
  • Handle spins or slips without engaging. The worm gear or spline inside the control mechanism has stripped. HeatShield uses a brass worm gear that outlasts cheaper pot-metal versions, but it still fails after roughly 15-20 years of regular use.
  • Rust flakes or metal debris in the firebox. The hinge pin has corroded, or the frame is failing at the weld points. Salt air from Boston Harbor accelerates this in homes east of Mass Ave, especially capless chimneys.
  • Damper stuck fully open or closed. The linkage cable has frayed and jammed, or creosote buildup has frozen the hinge. We see this most in chimneys that haven’t been swept in three or more years.
  • Water stains on the damper frame or firebrick. The damper isn’t sealing, and rain is running down the flue. A failed top-seal damper in Boston’s March nor’easters can dump a surprising volume of water before you notice it in the firebox.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Price Range (Installed)
Damper plate replacement only $280-$380
Full damper assembly (plate + frame) $420-$520
Top-mount cable/housing replacement $180-$260
Custom frame adapter (discontinued sizes) $340-$440

The range depends on three things: whether we can access the damper from the firebox or need to work from the roof, whether the firebrick needs minor repair after frame removal, and whether your flue size requires a custom adapter. Our estimate includes the Level-2 camera inspection, the part, the labor, and disposal of the old assembly. The number we quote is the number on the invoice. Every HeatShield damper repair we complete is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise - in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one safe check a homeowner can make: open the damper fully, shine a flashlight up the flue, and look for the model stamp on the frame. Note whether the plate sits flat or rocks on its hinge. That’s the extent of what we’d recommend handling yourself.

What goes wrong with DIY: HeatShield dampers are under spring tension, and the top-mount units require working at height on a roof that may be steep, slate, or both. The frame is set in refractory cement that must be chipped out without cracking the surrounding firebrick. We’ve been called to jobs where a homeowner removed the old damper successfully, discovered the new one didn’t fit the deteriorated opening, and now had an open flue and a cold house. If the chimney’s doing its job, you won’t notice it. You hire us so it stays that way. Call (857) 597-5950 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing before you commit to a visit.
