Gelco Chimney Cleaning & Sweep Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cleaning & Sweep in Boston: What to Know First

We provide independent Gelco chimney cleaning and sweep services across Boston, from triple-deckers in Dorchester to old brownstones near the Back Bay. Most Gelco jobs run between $180 and $340 for a standard sweep with Level 1 inspection, and we typically book within a week during burning season. We’re not affiliated with Gelco - we’re an independent service provider - which means we work on what’s actually wrong, not what a warranty flowchart says should be wrong.

This page is for homeowners who already know they own a Gelco liner, cap, or damper and need someone who recognizes the hardware without a manual. If you’re not sure what brand is in your chimney, we’ll tell you during the inspection. Call (857) 597-5950 to speak with a live person, any hour.

How Gelco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • Gelco Model C stainless caps in coastal Boston corrode at the base flange. The 304-grade stainless holds up inland, but salt air in South Boston and Eastie eats the seam where the cap meets the flue tile. We see this every March after a rough winter. We pull the cap, assess the flue edge, and either reseat with a Gelco-compatible base or move you to a higher-grade cap if the flue itself is compromised. No point in mounting new metal on crumbling tile.
  • Gelco pre-fab chimney chase covers (galvanized series) trap water behind the collar. These were common on 1990s and 2000s builds in Roslindale and West Roxbury. The galvanized coating fails at the fastener holes first, then water runs down the flue and pools behind the fireplace damper. Our sweep includes a chase-top camera check, and if the cover is the source, we quote a replacement in copper or stainless - not another galvanized cover that’ll fail the same way.
  • Gelco top-sealing dampers lose their silicone seal after 8-12 years of freeze-thaw. Boston’s temperature swings are hard on the Gelco damper’s rubber gasket. The symptom is a draft even when the damper reads “closed,” or a whistling noise on windy days. We inspect the seal track, clean the mechanism, and replace the gasket with OEM Gelco parts or a compatible aftermarket seal if Gelco’s lead time is running long. The damper body usually outlives the seal by a decade.
  • Gelco flexible stainless liners (older 316Ti series) develop creosote buildup at the flex points. The corrugations that make these liners flexible also create turbulence where creosote deposits thick and hard. In Boston, where homeowners burn shorter, hotter fires to avoid heating the whole house, this buildup can glaze over in a single season. We use rotary whips sized to Gelco’s corrugation pitch, not generic brushes that ride over the ridges. A glazed flex liner is a chimney fire waiting to happen.
  • Gelco chimney pots and decorative shrouds crack at the mortar bed in freeze-thaw cycles. These show up on restored Victorians in Jamaica Plain and Somerville. The pot itself is fine; the mortar bedding it was set in wasn’t rated for the expansion differential between clay and brick. During sweep and inspection, we check the bed joint with a borescope. If it’s cracked, we reset the pot with a proper expansion joint and refractory mortar - not more standard Type N that’ll crack again next February.

Our Gelco Chimney Cleaning & Sweep Process

  1. 1
Call and schedule. A live person answers, 24 hours a day. We ask about your Gelco component if you know it, the age of your system, and any symptoms. We quote a flat price range before booking - no dispatch fee, no surprise mileage charge for Boston proper.
  2. 2
Arrival and setup. Our technician arrives in a marked van, uniformed, with shoe covers and drop cloths. We verify the Gelco model or series from any markings, then run a Level 1 or Level 2 inspection depending on what we find.
  3. 3
Camera inspection and documentation. For Level 2, we send the camera up and down the flue. You see the footage on a tablet in real time. We note creosote thickness, liner condition, damper operation, and any Gelco-specific wear patterns. The photos go into your report with a plain-English verdict.
  4. 4
Cleaning with brand-appropriate tools. Gelco flex liners get rotary whips matched to corrugation pitch. Gelco caps and dampers get hand-cleaned and lubricated with compounds that won’t degrade the seals. We don’t use generic brushes on proprietary geometries.
  5. 5
Parts decision if repair is needed. We stock common Gelco gaskets, seals, and fasteners. For larger components, we source OEM Gelco or cross-reference to DuraFlex or HeatShield equivalents when the Gelco part is backordered or discontinued. We explain the trade-off and let you decide - no default to the most expensive option.
  6. 6
Final test and written guarantee. We run a draft test, verify damper closure, and clean the work area. You get a written report, the photos, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we make it right - in writing, no arguing.

What Gelco Chimney Cleaning & Sweep Costs in Boston

Service Typical Range What Moves the Price
Level 1 sweep and inspection (Gelco system) $180 - $260 Number of flues, accessibility of the cap, amount of creosote
Level 2 inspection with camera (Gelco system) $280 - $340 Height of chimney, condition of liner, need for roof access
Gelco damper seal replacement $220 - $380 OEM vs. aftermarket seal, whether the damper frame needs reconditioning
Gelco cap removal and reseat $160 - $280 Corrosion severity, whether flue tile repair is needed beneath
Chase cover replacement (Gelco to copper/stainless) $680 - $1,200 Chase dimensions, metal gauge, number of flue penetrations

These are Boston-market ranges based on what we’ve billed over the past three seasons. Your exact price depends on what we find, and we don’t recommend work without camera evidence you can see for yourself. Call (857) 597-5950 for a free estimate - the number we quote is the number on the invoice.

Why Boston Homeowners Call Hearthstone Chimney Co. for Gelco Work

We’ve been sweeping chimneys in Boston since 1984. That’s long enough to have worked on Gelco systems when they were new installations, and long enough to know which series have aged well and which haven’t.

Our 90-Day Done Right Promise means if we miss something, we come back - no paperwork, no arguing. Our technicians are background-checked, uniformed, and trained on Gelco geometry specifically, not just “chimneys in general.” When Gelco parts are scarce, we have working relationships with DuraFlex and HeatShield distributors, so you’re not held hostage by a backorder.

Russell Haines, our owner, learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and has spent more than two decades in the chimney business. If the chimney’s doing its job, you won’t notice it. You hire us so it stays that way.

Most jobs finish in a single visit. A live person answers the phone every hour of every day. And we document everything with photos and a plain-English verdict, because a homeowner who has lived in the same house for thirty years deserves to see the evidence, not take a stranger’s word.
