Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Boston Owner’s Guide

Gelco chimney cap installation in Boston typically runs $340-$780 depending on flue size, cap style, and whether your crown needs repair before mounting. We stock Gelco’s most common stainless-steel models on our trucks, and most replacements in Dorchester, Roslindale, and Jamaica Plain are completed in a single visit. Homeowners usually realize their cap has failed after finding rust streaks on the brick, hearing animals in the flue, or noticing water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace after a driving Nor’easter.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco caps break down into three main series you’ll encounter around Boston. The Single-Flue line covers individual flues from 8″ × 8″ up to 13″ × 18″ - measure your flue tile’s outside dimensions, not the crown. The Multi-Flue series sits on the crown itself and protects two or more flues, with base sizes running 14″ × 14″ to 30″ × 50″. The Outside-Mount models attach directly to the chimney’s exterior brick, common on pre-1950s homes in Somerville and Cambridge where the flue tile sits recessed.

Every Gelco cap carries a model stamp on the underside of the lid - look for a code starting with “SC” (single-flue), “MC” (multi-flue), or “OM” (outside-mount) followed by the nominal dimensions. If the stamp’s rusted over, measure twice: a cap that’s 1/2″ too small will gap in Boston’s freeze-thaw cycles, and one that’s too large won’t seat square on the flue. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, though we’ve installed their caps since the early 2000s and keep the common sizes on our trucks.

OEM Gelco caps use 24-gauge 304 stainless with a lifetime warranty against rust-through. Aftermarket equivalents exist at lower price points, but we’ve found the mesh on cheaper units collapses after three to four Boston winters where the salt air meets freeze-thaw. For coastal properties in Quincy or Hull, we recommend staying with Gelco’s 316 stainless upgrade - it costs more upfront and pays for itself in longevity.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing

  • Rust-colored streaks down the chimney face. Even “stainless” steel fails when the weld points or mesh screen corrode first. Boston’s combination of road salt aerosol and acidic flue gases accelerates this - we see it most on north-facing exposures in Brookline where the cap never fully dries.
  • Animals or nesting debris in the fireplace. A intact Gelco cap uses 3/4″ mesh to block squirrels, raccoons, and starlings. When the mesh separates at the seam or a corner lifts, you’ve got an entry point. We pulled a full starling nest from a Jamaica Plain flue last May - the homeowner hadn’t noticed the mesh had blown loose in a March windstorm.
  • Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney breast. The cap’s primary job is shedding water away from the flue opening. If the lid is dented, improperly pitched, or the mounting brackets have loosened, water tracks directly down the flue tile and finds any gap in the chimney’s interior.
  • Spalling or flaking on the crown below the cap. A cap that doesn’t overhang the crown by at least 2″ on all sides lets water hit the crown directly. In Boston, that water freezes, expands, and pops the surface off the crown - we’ve replaced caps that were technically “on” but so poorly sized they caused $800 in crown damage.
  • The cap is visibly tilted, loose, or missing after high winds. Gelco caps use either leg bolts into the flue tile or a compression-band mount. Leg bolts back out from thermal cycling; compression bands corrode. Either failure mode leaves a heavy metal object on your roof that can damage shingles or gutters on its way down.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Price Range
Gelco single-flue cap, standard 304 stainless, installed $340-$480
Gelco multi-flue cap, standard size, installed $520-$680
Gelco outside-mount cap with custom flashing $620-$780
Crown repair or leveling required before cap mount $180-$420 additional
316 stainless upgrade (coastal/high-exposure) $90-$140 additional

What drives the range: flue height above the roofline (taller = more ladder time), whether the existing fasteners have seized and need extraction, and crown condition. We photograph everything before quoting - no surprises on the bill. Our price includes the cap, stainless fasteners, sealant at the mounting points, and disposal of the old unit. Every installation carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing - if it’s not right, we come back, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s safe checking, and there’s unsafe doing. A homeowner can verify the cap’s condition from the ground with binoculars, check the model stamp if they can reach the roof safely from a low-slope garage, and measure flue dimensions from inside the firebox looking up. What we don’t recommend: climbing a pitched roof in Boston’s variable weather, working near a flue that may still be hot, or attempting to seat a new cap without verifying the flue tile hasn’t cracked beneath the old mount points.

The actual installation is straightforward for a trained technician with the right ladder, fall protection, and experience reading crown pitch. For everyone else, the risk-reward doesn’t pencil out. We’re background-checked, uniformed, and carry Gelco inventory on our trucks - most swaps take under 90 minutes. Call (857) 597-5950 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether yours is a candidate for same-day service.
