Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex produces two distinct product lines that share the name but serve different chimney types, and mixing them up is the most common ordering mistake we see in Boston.

The DuraFlex SS series is the flexible stainless-steel liner system, typically 316Ti or 304 alloy, used to reline masonry chimneys for gas, oil, or wood appliances. If your chimney was relined in the last 20 years, you likely have this. The cap for a DuraFlex SS liner terminates the flexible pipe itself, usually with a rain cap and spark arrestor combination that clamps or screws to the liner top.

The DuraFlex SW series is the smooth-wall flexible liner, also stainless, with a different outer profile and slightly larger outer diameter for the same nominal size. The cap flanges differ, and a standard SS cap will not seat correctly on SW pipe.

To identify yours: check the original installation paperwork for “SS” or “SW,” or measure the liner outer diameter with a caliper. A 6″ nominal DuraFlex SS measures roughly 6.375″ OD; the SW runs closer to 6.625″. We carry termination caps and adapters for both. Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Smoke drafting back into the house on startup. The cap’s spark arrestor mesh has clogged with creosote or the flapper mechanism has corroded shut, restricting exhaust flow. In Boston’s humid summers, we’ve seen galvanized caps rust solid in as little as four years.
• Water stains on the firebox ceiling or rust flakes in the hearth. The cap has shifted, the sealant has cracked, or the chase cover adapter has pulled away from the flue tile, letting rain run straight down the liner. This accelerates deterioration of the DuraFlex liner itself.
• Debris, leaves, or animal nesting material visible from below. A missing or damaged cap is an open invitation. Squirrels can breach a loose cap in a single afternoon, and their nests block airflow and create fire hazards.

What you can safely check from inside: shine a flashlight up the flue and note whether you see daylight (cap missing) or mesh (cap present). Check your firebox for new water stains after heavy rain. These observations help us when you call, but they do not require a ladder.

Where DIY goes wrong: DuraFlex liner caps install at the chimney top, typically 15 to 35 feet above grade on a Boston triple-decker or colonial. The work requires proper roof access, fall protection, and the ability to seat a cap squarely on a flexible liner that moves. A cap installed off-plumb channels water into the chase. Over-tightened clamps deform the liner and create stress points that crack in freeze-thaw cycles. Under-tightened clamps let the cap lift in the next storm.
