To identify what you’re working with, check the service paperwork from your last sweep or inspection. Look for notes mentioning “Copperfield crown mix,” “Copperfield forming system,” or part numbers in the 7000-series range for forming components. The forming system fits flue tile diameters from 6 inches to 13 inches, which covers most residential chimneys in Boston’s housing stock, from the narrow flues in Beacon Hill walk-ups to the larger units in West Roxbury center-chimney Colonials. If you have no paperwork, measure your flue tile outer diameter and the crown overhang, which should extend at least 2 inches past the chimney wall on all sides.
