Gelco Fireplace Services Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

How Gelco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • GD36 Series gas fireplaces: pilot assembly carbon buildup. The GD36’s SIT pilot runs hot and close to the burner pan. After five to seven Boston winters, the pilot orifice cakes with carbon and the flame lifts off the thermopile. Homeowners describe it as “the pilot lights, then nothing.” We pull the assembly, ultrasonic-clean the orifice, and check millivolt output at the valve. If the thermopile reads under 325 mV under load, we replace it with an OEM SIT part, not a generic, because the GD36 valve is picky about signal stability.
  • GD80 fireplace inserts: refractory panel cracking from thermal shock. The GD80’s wraparound refractory panels expand and contract against a steel firebox. In Boston’s freeze-thaw cycle, hairline cracks spread fast if the unit is over-fired. We inspect with a borescope through the damper, measure crack width, and replace panels with Gelco-specified refractory only. Aftermarket cement board can’t handle the GD80’s heat profile and will delaminate within two seasons.
  • GD19 vented gas logs: burner pan corrosion from condensate. The GD19’s shallow pan sits low in the firebox. If the chimney draft is marginal, acidic condensate pools and eats the pan from below. We see this in Back Bay brownstones with tall, unlined flues that never warm up. We replace the pan, check draft with a digital manometer, and if the reading’s under -.02″ WC, we address the venting before the new pan fails the same way.
  • Gelco wood-burning fireboxes: throat damper seizure. Gelco’s cast-iron throat dampers in pre-2000 installations corrode where the pivot pin meets the frame. The telltale is a handle that moves but a plate that doesn’t. We disassemble, media-blast the pin and frame, lubricate with high-temp graphite, and replace the pin if it’s worn oval. In Boston’s salt-air zones, like coastal East Boston, this happens faster. We check it every sweep.
  • Gelco direct-vent terminals: wind-driven down-drafting. Gelco’s standard horizontal termination cap has a low profile. On roofs above 25 feet, or where neighboring buildings create a wind tunnel, the cap can’t shed a strong downdraft. We see this on Beacon Hill and in the North End. We measure the vent run, check for elbows that slow exhaust, and if the geometry’s correct, we upgrade to a high-wind termination, not a generic universal cap that voids the vent warranty.

Our Gelco Fireplace Services Process

  1. 1
Call and schedule. A live person answers, asks what you’re seeing, and books a window. We don’t use apps or callback queues.
  2. 2
Arrival and diagnosis. Our technician arrives in a marked van, uniformed, and starts with the data plate to confirm series and serial. We photograph everything before we touch it.
  3. 3
Camera inspection and verdict. We run a Level-2 camera inspection when the problem involves the firebox, flue, or venting. You see the footage. We explain what we found, what it means, and what options you have, including “this can wait.”
  4. 4
Parts decision. If we need a part, we source OEM Gelco when the warranty or fit demands it. For out-of-warranty units, we use quality aftermarket from our regular suppliers, same specs, lower cost. We tell you which we’re using and why.
  5. 5
Repair and test. We complete the work, test every function, and run a combustion analysis on gas units. The technician cleans the work area to the condition we found it.
  6. 6
Documentation and guarantee. You get photos, a plain-English report, and a written invoice. Every job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we come back. No paperwork, no arguing.

Why Boston Homeowners Call Hearthstone Chimney Co. for Gelco Work

We’ve been sweeping and repairing chimneys in Boston for over 42 years. Russell Haines learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, where instructors drilled into students that shortcuts cost more than doing it right the first time. That stuck. When a Gelco unit comes in with a problem another sweep couldn’t solve, we usually find a misdiagnosed venting issue or a part swapped in that wasn’t spec’d for the series.

We document every inspection with photos and a plain-English verdict. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise is in writing. Our technicians are background-checked and uniformed. And because we also work with DuraFlex, HeatShield, and other professional-grade brands, we can fix what the Gelco connects to, not just the Gelco itself. If the chimney’s doing its job, you won’t notice it. You hire us so it stays that way.
