HeatShield Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Crown Repair: The Boston Owner’s Guide

HeatShield crown repair in Boston typically runs $650-$1,400 installed, depending on flue size and how much of the original crown has spalled or cracked. We stock HeatShield-compatible refractory mix and application forms on our trucks, and most crown repairs are completed in a single visit. Homeowners usually discover the problem during a routine sweep, or when they notice sand-colored debris in the firebox after a rainstorm that the crown should have shed.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield’s crown repair system isn’t model-locked to a specific fireplace insert or stove line. It’s a flue-top application, sized to the chimney’s exterior dimensions rather than the appliance below. What matters is the crown’s footprint: HeatShield’s refractory slurry is troweled over the existing concrete crown, so we need a minimum of two inches of sound substrate around the flue tile to build a proper bond. If the crown has eroded past that, we switch to a full pour or a pre-formed Gelco or Copperfield cap instead.

To identify what you’ve got, look for the HeatShield warranty tag on the flue liner, usually stamped near the thimble or cleanout door. The tag won’t list crown specs, but it tells us which installer did the original work and whether they used HeatShield’s Cerfractory Foam for a previous liner job. That history matters: if the liner was coated, the crown was likely inspected at the same time, and we can cross-reference our own job photos from prior visits. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with HeatShield, but we’ve applied their materials on Boston chimneys since the product line first came to New England.

OEM HeatShield crown mix is a proprietary blend of refractory cement and ceramic aggregate. We use it for crowns that will see sustained flue gas exposure, especially on vented gas inserts where condensation is aggressive. For standard wood-burning flues with sound structural crowns, we sometimes recommend a quality aftermarket equivalent from Olympia Chimney at a lower price point. The difference is heat tolerance, not longevity. Either way, we show you the material data sheet before we mix.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Debris in the firebox after rain. The crown’s slope is meant to shed water away from the flue opening. When the refractory surface cracks or the bond line separates, water carries dissolved cement and sand down the flue. You’ll find it heaped on the smoke shelf or scattered across the hearth.
  • Hairline cracks radiating from the flue tile. These start small, often invisible from the ground. Our camera picks them up during a Level-2 inspection. In Boston’s freeze-thaw cycle, a crack that opens in November becomes a gap by March.
  • Crown surface that sounds hollow when tapped. This means the refractory layer has delaminated from the concrete base. Water has gotten between the layers and is working them apart. It will not re-bond on its own.
  • Efflorescence or white staining on the chimney exterior below the crown. Salt deposits mean moisture is migrating through the masonry. The crown is no longer protecting the top of the chimney, and the brick below is absorbing what the crown should have deflected.
  • Gas odor or draft reversal on windless days. A compromised crown can disrupt proper venting, especially on shorter chimneys common in Dorchester triple-deckers and Jamaica Plain bungalows. The pressure differential that draws flue gases up gets interrupted when cold air sinks through crown gaps.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Price Range
HeatShield crown resurfacing, sound substrate $650-$890
Partial rebuild with forms, moderate spalling $900-$1,150
Full crown removal and pour, plus new cap $1,200-$1,400

The range depends on three things: how much of the old crown we can save, whether the flue tile needs re-bedding, and access. A flat roof in the Back Bay with a parapet wall takes longer than an open ridge in Roslindale. Every estimate includes the Level-2 camera inspection, photos you keep, and a plain-English verdict on whether the repair can wait or should be scheduled before the next burning season. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the work in writing, no arguing. We also apply a permanent 5% senior and veteran discount, and if you’ve got a written estimate over $250, we’ll take $50 off our repair price.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no high-tension spring or electrical hazard on a crown, but there is a fall hazard, and there is the problem of knowing when the substrate is too far gone to resurface. A homeowner can safely check from the ground with binoculars for obvious cracks, or from the attic for water staining on the chimney chase. What you cannot judge from below is whether the concrete beneath the refractory layer is saturated and freezing, or whether the flue tile has settled and opened a gap that slurry alone won’t bridge.

We’ve seen DIY crown patches fail within two winters because the surface wasn’t properly scored, or because standard mortar was used where refractory cement was required. The material cost difference is maybe forty dollars. The cost of doing it twice, plus the water damage to the flue liner in between, is not. If the chimney’s doing its job, you won’t notice it. You hire us so it stays that way.
